MATCH REPORT
DEVON & EXETER LEAGUE SENIOR ONE
SATURDAY 27 OCTOBER 2007
| BUDLEIGH SALTERTON (1) 5 | v |
UNIVERSITY (0) 0 |
Budleigh entertained Exeter University on Saturday and put in an excellent team display to move five points clear in Senior One. The game started at a very good tempo with both teams playing slick passing football. It was Simon Rose who opened the scoring after thirty five minutes with a simple tap in, and despite pressing hard for the second it remained one nil at the break.
The second half started with Exeter forcing Budleigh back for five minutes but the centre back pairing of Tony Pallett and Kirk Owen were outstanding, restricting the visitors to two shots on target all game. A slick counter attack set Rose free and he cut inside from the right and chipped the keeper to score a fantastic individual goal. With forty minutes still to play Budleigh treated the home fans to some top class football for the remainder of the game. Scott Howarth made it three when his deflected shot wrong footed the keeper and flew in. Then Rose completed a stunning hat-trick when Howarth's fine cross was overhead kicked in from eight teen yards out with real power behind it. Left back Craig Higham took his tally to four for the season when Ian Mortimore’s free kick was headed home late on. The pleasing thing for the Budleigh management was the team's average age of twenty one, and how the player's stood up for themselves after some shocking tackles from the visitors. Man of the match went to Simon Rose after one of the best hat tricks I've seen. Next week Budleigh travel to Broadclyst who are unbeaten in seven with a 2.15pm ko.
