MATCH REPORT

DEVON & EXETER LEAGUE - PREMIER

SATURDAY 30 AUGUST 2008

NEWTOWN (1) 4 v BUDLEIGH SALTERTON 0

A funny old game football is how I would describe this game as Budleigh looked the better side for the first half, but their failure to take chances punished them. With regular keeper Brad Evans unavailable due to injury, understudy Noel Pond stepped in goal, and Tim Nield dropped out after the pre match warm up with a hamstring strain. After a good passing move Simon Rose broke but his shot was right at the keeper, then Aaron Poulton burst through the Newtown defence and fired just the wrong side of the post. Then with five minutes till half time Carl Everest passed back to the keeper Noel Pond whose clearance went straight to the Newtown striker who scored

The second half started much the same with Budleigh pressing but disaster struck again when Pond dropped a cross and then pulled down the Newtown striker for a penalty which was thumped home. Newtown were now being ordered to shoot from any where and goal number three arrived when a long range strike flew in the middle of the goal. Four soon followed when unfortunately Pond made another mistake but to be fair to the players they never gave up. On the plus side new signing Alex West had a solid game and at least Budleigh are creating lots of chances, but just not clicking in front of goal.
