MATCH REPORT

DEVON & EXETER LEAGUE SENIOR ONE

SATURDAY 5 JANUARY 2008

BUDLEIGH SALTERTON  (3)  5
v
BROADCLYST (0) 1

Budleigh welcomed Broadclyst to Greenway Lane and were looking to extend their unbeaten run to thirteen games.  Leading scorer Simon Rose returned from a two week Christmas break and volleyed Budleigh ahead on fourteen minutes.  Scott Thornhill then scored a minute later to double the lead.  On sixteen minutes Rose's quick feet resulted in him being taken out and David Evans missed the resulting penalty.  Evans did make amends when his hard work resulted in Scott Howarth being played in and he slotted home on the half hour mark.

The second half started as the first ended with Budleigh playing some quick passing football and putting the visiting keeper under constant pressure.  Andy Bennett hit the bar and on another day would have liked to convert one of his close range attempts.   Rose got his sides fourth and his second of the day on the hour mark after Thornhill's pace chased down a lost cause.  But goal of the game came on seventy minutes when Howarth's cross was volleyed home by left back Craig Higham from eighteen yards out.  Budleigh made three changes after this and lost a bit of shape, but sub Steve Tweedie did have a header cleared off the line and struck a post late on before Broadclyst's late consloation.   Man of the match was Richard Higham but the whole squad played really well.
