SOUTH WEST PENISNSULA LEAGUE - DIVISION ONE (EAST)

SATURDAY 5 APRIL 2008

OKEHAMPTON (2) 2
v
BUDLEIGH SALTERTON   (2) 3

Budleigh Salterton went close to opening the scoring after 5 minutes when Ashley Barker’s flicked on header from a corner was pushed away by the keeper. A slip up in the home defence let in Danny Williams to make it 1 – 0 to Budleigh after 9 minutes, and 5 minutes later the same player made it 2 – 0 from the spot after a handball. After 20 minutes the game took a bizarre twist. From a corner kick the Budleigh keeper Chris Wright caught the ball a yard off his goal line. He was then bundled into the net by an Okehampton player, at which point everybody was expecting a free kick to be given. Even the home players had not celebrated and did not do so until the referee awarded a goal. This incident completely unsettled the Robins who were then caught out with a long free kick going through the middle of the defence. Adam Mortimer ran on to it and levelled the score at 2 – 2.

In the second period neither side looked like breaking the dead lock and a draw seemed to be the probable result. Then with just 5 minutes left on the clock Danny Minto, on as a sub, unleashed a spectacular volley from all of 35 yards which flew in off the underside of the cross bar, securing all three ponts for the Robins.
