The poor sticky surface of the Sector Lane pitch did not lend itself to good football. After about 20 minutes the Robins put together a good flowing move which opened up the Axminster defence. The move started in mid field with Ashley Barker who found Danny Williams wide on the right wing. His cross into the box gave Danny Hall the chance to make it 1 – 0. Williams had a chance to increase the lead 5 minutes later but his shot was blocked by the keeper. On 40 minutes the home side managed to breach the solid Budleigh defence but the final shot from John Hursford was wide of the post. Budleigh struck again when Stuart Francis skipped past Richard Spillar and crossed for Williams who scored from close range to make it 2 – 0.
Ten minutes into the
second half Chris Wright saved well when Adam Skelton made room to shoot from
15 yards out The hosts again went close to reducing the deficit when a 20
yard free kick by Adam Skelton glanced off the Budleigh cross bar. On 87 minutes
new signing Dave Wilkes was on as a substitute, making his Budleigh debut,
fired home a cross from Neil Pointing out on the right to make the final score
3 – 0.
