The first goal scoring opportunity fell to the students on 23 minutes when Sam Hughes cut in from the right of the 18 yard box and fired into the side netting. Five minutes later they took the lead when, from a quickly taken corner, Kieran Mercer’s cross was headed home by Nick Robbins. Ten minutes later Budleigh levelled when Neil Pointing’s cross was cleared only as far as Danny Hall who lobbed the keeper from 18 yards.

Twenty minutes into the second half Budleigh went close to taking the lead when Brett Wright’s free kick, touched on by Neil Saunders, was cleared off the line. The students were looking very dangerous from a succession of corner kicks but not finding a finishing touch.

The game went into extra time with neither side able to trouble the goal keepers.

The keepers were certainly tested in the penalty shoot out which saw Chris Wright save 2 of the student first 3 efforts. With Budleigh having taken the lead it was the turn of Charlie Collins in the University goal to become a hero, and grab the headlines. He saved 3 of the Robins remaining penalties, including touching onto the bar a thunderbolt from his opposite number to win the game for his team.
