19 April 2008

Reserves win away at Seaton to seal their promotion to the Premier League.  One more point to be certain of the league title, although their goal difference may be enough.  Well done to Alex and all his team.

First team beat Buckfastleigh comfortably at Greenway Lane, and after the game were presented with the league trophy and individual medals.  The presentation was made by the league's vice chairman, Mr Hayman, who was accompanied by the league Secretary, Mr Hiscox.  It was just those two officers present for this presentation.

CHAMPIONS OF THE LEAGUE ONE (EAST)

A very hard fought 1 - 0 win at Exmouth Town last night saw Budleigh confirmed as league champions in the inaugural season.  A look at the league table shows what an incredible season they have had.  Just one defeat and only 15 goals conceded.

Well done to all involved in this achievement.

12 April 2008

I suppose the good news is that Newton Abbot were beaten by Stoke Gabriel today.  That leaves the first team needing just 2 points from their remaining games to win the league.  They could do that on Wednesday evening at Exmouth.  After that it is home against the bottom team next Saturday.

The not quite so good news is that the reserves dropped 2 points in a goal less draw at home to East Budleigh.  With Newtown winning we are level points but have a better goal difference.  We have 3 games left, from which we need 4 points to be mathematically certain, although 3 would probably be enough given the goal difference.

9 April 2008

Sorry for the update delay, got dragged away to the Emirates again, protesting all the way.

Another three points for both teams takes them nearer the league titles.  I make it the first team need 5 points from 6 games if Newton Abbot do not drop a point in their run in (8 games).  The reserves benefited from Newtown only drawing at Alphington.  They need 5 points from 4 games, although 4 plus their better goal difference may be enough.  Again this assumes Newtown win their last two matches.

29 March 2008

First team game at Liverton fell victim to the weather, being called off by the match referee after we had arrived.  Only three games survived in our league, resulting in Stoke Gabriel climbing two places to second, and Crediton climbing one place to go out of the bottom two.

The Newton Abbot - Exmouth game was also called off late.

The reserves did not have a game this week and at present I have not been able to find out who, if anybody, did play in their league.

Sadly, in the S W Premier league, Cully got smashed by Bodmin, and Clyst were also beaten.

22 March 2008

First team had another clean sheet when they beat Galmpton 2 - 0 at Greenway Lane.  The very strong and swirling wind spoiled what could have been an entertaining game.  I thought the visitors performance was very creditable.

Second team won 3 - 0 at Westexe to make it a good day all round.

19 March 2008

Budleigh  4  v. Ottery  0

Another clean sheet and three more points as Budleigh beat Ottery.  I thought the visitors played some very good football, in the first half especially, when only some poor finishing prevented them taking the lead.  In the end it was comfortable, with goals from Wilkes (2), Hall and Minto.

We have 8 games to play and need 11 points to make sure of the title.

The visit to Newton Abbot has been changed to Wednesday 30 April, kick off 7.30pm.

16 March 2008

Yesterday was a complete wash out in the first team's league - in fact in all three SWP Leagues only one game survived.  In the reserve team's league the only game to be played was Seaton v. Broadclyst which ended all square at 3 each.  This helps us a little in that if Seaton win their games in hand they will now be 5 points behind us, instead of 3 points.

The first team trip to Exmouth has been re-arranged for 16 April kick off 7.30pm.

8 March 2008

First team back to winning ways.

Budleigh 2  v.  Crediton  0

Reserves drop points at University.

University 1  v.  Budleigh  1

1 March 2008

The bubble finally burst today when Stoke Gabriel gained a narrow 1 - 0 victory at Greenway Lane.  I suppose it had to happen, but it is a shame it happened when the London Branch of the Supporters Club was here and making a lot of noise.  They enjoyed it, but said it would have been better if we had won the game.

Budleigh 0  v.  Stoke Gabriel 1

Reserves lose at Hatherleigh in East Devon Cup.

Hatherleigh 4  v.  Budleigh 2

23 February 2008

Plymstock  0  v.  Budleigh  0

Budleigh 1  v. Otterton 0

First team are still unbeaten in the league, but drop points, albeit for only the second time this season - held to a goal less draw at Plymstock.

Second team beat Otterton 1 - 0 but were under enormous pressure for long periods of the game.

The site has changed a little and is now the official site for Budleigh Salterton F C.

16 February 2008

First team continue on their ubeaten run with another victory, today getting the better of Okehampton eventually.  Goal less at half time the second half was only minutes old when Budleigh were awarded a penalty which Danny Williams converted.  A few minutes later Matt Byrne made it safer.  There was no more added to the scoresheet.

My information is the reserves went 1 - 0 up in the first half and then had a goal disallowed.  Final score 1 - 1.

BUDLEIGH (0) 2   v.  OKEHAMPTON (0) 0

ALPHINGTON 1  v. BUDLEIGH RESERVES  1

14 February 2008

BUDLEIGH (0) 3   v.  NEWTON ABBOT (2) 2

In the first half it is fair to say we were played off the pitch.  The visitors were sharper, more positive and very hungry for a result.  We were just not in it at all and their half time 2 - 0 lead was well justified.

That having been said it was one of those games where, whatever they did, the ball went to a yellow shirt, once even after bouncing off the referee.

No idea what Mr Smith and Mr Phillips said in the Budleigh dressing room at half time.  The second half was an almost complete reversal, with the home side now taking the game to the visitors, and eventually running out winners by that odd goal in 5.  Perhaps a draw would have been a fair reflection overall, but that's the way it goes sometimes.

Shame about the petulant behaviour of some of the visiting players, firstly after Budleigh scored from the spot and wanted to get on with the re-start, and secondly after the game.  It is sad to see good food wasted.

9 February 2008

APPLEDORE 0   BUDLEIGH 2

8 February 2008

Remember there is no game at Greenway Lane this Saturday, 9 February.  First team are at Appledore with a 2.45pm kick off, reserves have no game.

Next home game is Wednesday evening against Newton Abbot, with a 7.30pm kick off.

2 February 2008 - 1800

Budleigh 4  v.  Seaton  1

Reserves with 10 men held on to their lead at 1 - 0, then increased it to 3 - 0 before conceeding a goal, later to score again as Seaton pushed everybody forward.

With east Budleigh being beaten out of sight by Otterton our position at the top of the table is stronger still.

Axminster  0  v.  Budleigh  3

First team continue their winning ways with first half goals from the two "Dannys" and a late goal from one of the new signings.

26 January 2008

The dreaded penalty shoot out - again!

University (1) 1  v.  Budleigh (1) 1  a.e.t

University win 3 - 2 on penalties.

24 January 2008

Morrison Bell Cup

Budleigh (1) 2  Honiton  (0) 0

Goals from Matt Byrne and Neil Pointing, together with a penalty save by Chris Wright at 1 - 0, take us through to the next round of this local competition.  Our game was brought forward so it may be some while before we discover our next opponents.

19 January 2008

Budleigh  2     Culm  1

The second team continue their winning ways with this unconvincing victory.  If we can play so poorly and still get three points the omens must be good.

The first team did not have a game, but even so their league position was strengthened by other results.  Exmouth and Stoke had a 0 - 0 draw, Newton Abbot went down 1 - 0 at Plymstock.

I make that we are 9 points clear of Exmouth with 3 games in hand and 11 points clear of Newton Abbot on level games.

12 January 2008

First team win by a 6 - 1 scoreline, but that was never as comfortable it suggests.  Full marks to Teignmouth who produced some very good football.  The hat trick this week was to Matt Byrne.

Jamie Densham made his Bideford debut yesterday, at home to Hallen in the Western League Premier.  He scored all five goals in the 5 - 1 win and all before half time!  Well done Jamie.

8 January 2008

Both teams continued their winning ways, both having a 5 - 1 scoreline, first team at Alphington and reserves at home to Broadclyst.  So we set off in the new year with both teams sitting proudly at the top of their respective leagues.

Sadly we've had to say good bye to Jamie Densham who has gone to Bideford Town, the other Devon Robins.  His hat trick at Alphington was a good way to sign off!  We wish him every success.

Throgmorton Cup news is that we will be away to University who beat premier league Torpoint on Saturday.  This is on 26 January with a 2pm kick off.

Minor changes to fixture list for both teams are uploaded.

1 January 2008

All at Greenway Lane wish you good health and happiness for the coming year.

30 December 2007

Throgmorton Cup - Quarter finals

University or Torpoint  v. Budleigh Salterton, date to be arranged.

The University game against Torpoint to be played on 5 January 2008.

29 December 2007

Sorry about the lack of updates but two boys aged 6 and 3, both of whom are computer mad, took over my office.

First team win at Stoke and reserves draw at home to Willand.

Budleigh Salterton  1    Willand  1

Second team match report is uploaded.  First team awaits.

22 December 2007

Budleigh Salterton 1    Plymstock  0

Culm United  3    Budleigh Salterton  3

First team made to work very hard for a slender win over Plymstock.  More to follow when I am told more.

Reserves fight back from 3 - 2 down to draw, in spite of having only 10 men following Scot Howarth's red card.

15 December 2007

Ottery St Mary  1  Budleigh Salterton  2

Budleigh Salterton 5  Exmouth Amateurs  0

Joel HAWES has transferred to Cullompton.  I am sure all at Budleigh Salterton F C wish him well.

5 December 2007

Budleigh 1   Holsworthy 0

2 December 2007

Both team's match reports are uploaded.  It is interesting to note the first team have conceded 6 goals in 11 games - about 1 every other game.  The next nearest is Stoke Gabriel with 13 from 13 games - 1 a game, then Newton Abbot with 15 from 13 - a little more than 1 a game.

1 December 2007

First team continue their winning ways with a 3 - 1 result at Totnes & Dartington.  More info as soon as I know.  Newton Abbot lost 2 - 1 at Ottery so I make that we go top on goal difference.

Reserves drop league points at home for the first time this season.  Held 1 - 1 by a very impressive Newtown side, who could easily have won today.

1 December 2007

Late with everything yet again.  Last week I got dragged off, kicking and screaming, to The Emirates to see the Wigan game.  Was then allowed to stay in London for some shopping.

We are now up to date with results, reports, tables and upcoming fixtures.

As of 12 noon today both games are on.  Totnes & Dartignton had a pitch inspection and it is passed fit to play.  No problems at Greenway Lane for the second team game against Newtown.

Wednesday 5 December, v. Holsworthy in Throgmorton Cup, 7.45pm.

20 November 2007

A little late, but sincerely meant.  Our congratulations to Parkway for the victory over Ilfracombe in the vase last Saturday.  All at Budleigh will be wishing them well in the next round at home to Hungerford.  That's a massive one and if they win that we will know we were knocked out by a very very good team!!

17 November 2007

First team comfortably ease past Liverton.  Williams (3), Densham and Byrne the scorers.

BUDLEIGH  5  v.  LIVERTON  0

Les Carter died on Wednesday last.  See club news - click here

15 November 2007

Neighbours Exmouth Town beat Axminster to go top of the league.

10 November 2007

First team win 4 - 1 at Galmpton after losing a goal in the first minute.  Goals from Danny Williams, Danny Hall, Joel Hawes and Danny Burwood who opened the scoring.

At Elmore the reserves went 2 - 0 down before finding their normal rhythm and coming back to lead 3 - 2 at the interval and finally to win 6 - 3. I went to see this game and must say the standard of refereeing, looking at it from where I was standing, left much to be desired.

7 November 2007

First team get back to winning ways with a hard fought 2 - 0 win against Totnes & Dartington.

3 November 2007

Reserves continue with their winning ways.  East Budleigh lose so the gap is now 7 points over Seaton, 8 over East Budleigh with both having 2 games in hand.

First team drop league points for the first time this season.  Exmouth came for a draw and that is what they got.  We had so many chances, at least 75% of the play, but the goal just would not come.

27 October 2007

A Simon Rose hat trick sinks the University.

Our second team played University at Greenway Lane and turned in one of the best exhibitions of football I have seen in the D & E League.  They played controlled passing football, feet to feet, and into spaces which they created.  It was a pleasure to watch and we should all be saying well done to them and the management team.

The first team came unstuck at lower league opposition in the Devon Senior Cup.  More information when I know more.

Dates for your diary.

Thursday 22 November, Devon v. Dorset - U18 Ladies Kick off 7.30pm

Wednesday 5 December, v. Holsworthy in Throgmorton Cup, 7.45pm.

20 October 2007

A nail biter at Greenway Lane today.

BUDLEIGH 3   CLYST ROVERS 2  (A.E.T)

Reserves win at Otterton by the same scoreline and remain top of their league.

More later when I have details.

18 October 2007

Budleigh  1   Feniton 2  (aet)

So yet again we take an early exit from the Axminster Hospital cup losing to D & E League opposition for the second year running.  I was not able to stay until the end but from what I saw Feniton looked (to me) the better side.

13 October 2007

SECOND TEAM BEAT PREMEIR LEAGUE PACE SETTERS

EXETER CIVIL SERVICE  0   BUDLEIGH RESERVES  1

In the first round of the East Devon Cup our second team travelled to Exeter Civil Service and won by the 1 goal margin.  More details to follow when I receive them.

CREDITON   0   BUDLEIGH   3

In the SWP league it was busniess as usual for our first team who ran out comfortable winners by 3 - 0.  More details when I get them.

11 October 2007

My first comments about the sending off was that from where I stood it was harsh.  I am now told by others much closer to the incident that it was the correct decision.  From different angles you see different things, but I am happy to be put right.

Without wanting anybody to think this is a mutual admiration comment, all at Budleigh who made the trip are very grateful to the officers and committee of Parkway for the very warm and welcoming reception they gave us.  They had obviously worked very hard.  In the hospitality stakes we need to keep on our toes.  Thank you all, it made the evening much better.

The dream ends..............

PARKWAY  2   BUDLEIGH 0

After about 35 minutes Budleigh were reduced to 10 men and from then onwards it was always going to be a struggle.  At half time it was 0 - 0, but in the second half the extra man began to tell and so it was to the end of the game.

10 October 2007

I am sure we all wish good luck to our team for tonight's replay at Bolitho Park.  If you intend to travel on the coach please be at the pick up points in good time.  I will try to post the result on here as soon as we return, and we will update Sharon at the club at full time.  (She'll love me if she gets a load of phone calls).

Travel arrangements for Wednesday's replay

Coach will leave the club at 4.45pm (1645).  There will be one pick up point only, at the Devon Motel, at 5.15pm (1715).  We anticipate leaving Plymouth no later than 10.30pm (2230).  Much depends on extra time/penalties or not.

To offset some of the cost there will be a small charge for supporters travelling on the coach.  £5 each sounds good to the treasurer!

If you want to travel please let Nick Pannell know on 01395 - 445877 as soon as possible, or put your name on the list in the club house.

7 October 2007

The dream lives on - just

Budleigh 2  Plymouth Parkway 2

Twice we were a goal behind and twice we levelled at the last knockings.  Trailing from about mid way in the second half we levelled on about 89 minutes.  In extra time we went down again mid way through the first period, to level again (probably with the best goal of the game) on about 118 minutes.

Replay Wednesday, 7.45pm.

Newtown 1  Budleigh Reserves 4

Another good result for the second team.  Is there something about a 4 - ? scoreline - have a look at the results for both teamsto date.

5 October 2007

I see that our near neighbours Exmouth Town have crept up the league table to one place below us, on goal difference.  They have played three games more than us.  On which note it is worth a mention that we have only played 4 league games to date.  We have one scheduled for Wednesday evening, home to Totnes & Dartington (7.30pm), but that goes out of the window if tomorrow's Vase game is drawn because Wednesday would be the replay for that.  Whatever happens we are away to Crediton a week tomorrow (13 October).  We then have two Saturdays of cup games, so the next league game is Exmouth at home on 3 November, by which time we could be several games adrift.  I've never been happy with games in hand, would much rather have points on the board, and at our level a load of fixtures in a short time span causes havoc.

Team news for tomorrow against Parkway, as far as I can gather, is that one of the strikers is out and another is struggling with an ankle injury.  There is one more major doubt but I have no name to give.  Julian is quietly confident that, although we are again the under dogs, this is another game which we can win.  I am sure we all hope he is right on that one.

24 September 2007

Because of the victory in the Vase there is a change of fixture for the second team on 6 October.  Instead of being at home to Newtown they will now travel to Newtown instead.

23 September 2007

BUDLEIGH 4     BODMIN 1

Do not be misled by the scoreline.  For a long period in the second half we were outplayed.  If I was a Bodmin supporter I would be very miffed.

When I get the official report from Alan Beer I will post it.  Meanwhile my own thoughts were that for the first 20 minutes or so we were over run, and then scored the opener.  From then to half time it was a much better performance from us.  In the second half we really struggled to get off the blocks and Bodmin put us under tremendous pressure all through the half.  It was no surprise when they equalised and I would not have been surprised if they had scored again.  Our back four had other ideas and did well to keep them out.  Into extra time and it appeared our fitness levels came into play and we gradually took more control, adding three more in the second period, as they threw men forward.

Bodmin played good football, fast and to feet mainly.  They are a big side physically and it is easy to see why they are one of the favourites to win the Premier league.  The one disappointment was the way they protested to the referee all through the game, putting him under pressure as much as they could.  Perhaps it was frustration but at one stage late in the game there were four Bodmin players surrounding the official when a throw in had been given to Budleigh, in a totally innocuous position.

Reserves go down 2 - 1 in the local derby at East Budleigh, match report posted.

Team news for Saturday against Bodmin Town is that Jamie Densham is struggling with a hamstring and Danny Williams is suspended.  At present there is otherwise a full strength squad available.

Don't forget it is a 3pm kick off, and we are expecting a much larger than usual crowd.

Congratulations to Julian Phillips and his wife Carol on the birth of their son last Saturday.  There is no truth in the suggestion that the little one signed forms for the Robins on Sunday.

15 September 2007

Robins clip Tigers tail

Robins ran out very comfortable winners in today's battle of the undefeated.  As early as the second minute Andy Bennett headed home a superb cross.    On 22 minutes Budleigh were awarded a  penalty which Matt Byrne stepped up to put away comfortably.  On 35 minutes Danny Burwood put the finishing touches to another superb cross, and on 40 minutes Alvin Pollard stole the show when he picked up from a loose clearance and outstripped the defence to coolly slot away.

To be honest to our visitors, our keeper, Chris Wright, had only two things to do in the first half.  One was to cut out a hanging cross and the other to stop a long range effort.

In the second half it was a little different, the visitors had a player sent off (quite rightly) and then, as often happens, played better than ever.  For long periods they might have reduced the deficit but it was never to be,  The hosts could have increased their lead but some super goal keeping prevented it.

So this was the team which had been causing early upsets in the league, unbeaten and going well.  Perhaps today they met a strong league team and now they know what is facing them for the rest of the season.

Manager Kevin Smith says we won but didn't play to our full potential.  Today we were without our three main strikers.

The second team recovered their composure to beat St Thomas by 4 - 2.  More later.

9 September 2007

Now we know that it will be Bodmin who visit Greenway Lane in the FA Vase on 22 September.  They went to Shaftesbury yesterday and won by 3 - 2.

Alex has sent me a brief match report for the second team game against St Thomas yesterday.  He is hoping that the league fixture against the same opponents next week will give them the chance to right some wrongs.

8 September 2007

Second team come down to earth at Exeter St Thomas, losing 4 - 1 and never looking in the game.

7 September 2007

Sorry about the delay with the match report from last Saturday, there was a break down in communication somehow.  It is now posted.

If you look at the SWP league website for the leading scorers in One (East) you will notice that our players on 3 goals are not mentioned, although others with 3 goals are.  The league secretary has explained the reason to me and I can understand his difficulty.  He now has to deal with three divisions and 51 clubs.  To make sure his stats are accurate he has to wait until the Friday of each week when all result sheets have to be with him.  He can then sort out the stats.  This is infinitely preferable to taking the details from the Sunday Independent which in the past has proved to be inaccurate leading to a correction when the result sheets are in.

Our own stats can be found by visiting the team page (first or second) and clicking on the stats link.

Hope to see a few of us at Newton St Cyres tomorrow to support the second team in their cup game against Exeter St Thomas.  They need a cup run to give them a chance of getting some home games before the end of the year.

1 September 2007

First team make it three out of three.  Second team kick off with a 4 - 1 win at Ammies.

BUDLEIGH SALTERTON  (2) 3
v
ALPHINGTON (1) 1
DENSHAM 2, HALL

An entertaining game at Greenway Lane saw the hosts run out comfortable winners.  Although Alphington scored the first goal they never looked like getting anything from the game and so it was.  With Budleigh creating chances almost at will the result was inevitable, only the margin to be determined.

Kevin Smith said after the game that he was well satisfied, "we created a lot of chances and have now taken maximum points from the first three games.  We cannot improve on that".

I have spoken to Phil Margret about Spike Hughes.  He was our manager in about 1975, possibly 74, to the end of the decade.  Phil says he was still playing when Spike was the manager, he remembers him well and with fond memories.

A note of sadness.  John "Spike" Hughes who was our manager many, many years ago has died at the age of 79.  Memorial service at Exeter Crematorium on Thursday 6 September, at 4pm in St Peter's Chapel.
